It's 12 to the origin and I finally popped a facility that gets it. My edge nodes run on ancient Supermicro X8s with 120V-only PSUs, dual L5640, 48GB DDR3. Draw 180W at the wall. Every other colo wanted $25/mo extra for "non-standard power" or forced 208V step-down.
Hetzner's new Denver location: 120V included in 2A base commit. No step-down. No dirty looks. I can finally cache hit on my legacy hardware instead of miss on new spend.
Downside: they require a tour before first rack. Upside: I already booked mine. Who's coming?
They don't understand why we kept the old gear. 120V was standard for decades. Every PSU had the slide switch. 115 or 230. They don't make them like that anymore.
Hetzner used to be a telco hotel in 2003. I remember when that building had DS3 terminations in the basement. The power was all 48V DC then. They converted in 2011 I think. Or was it 2012...
They said my internet box needs "208V conversion" and wanted $400 from Supermicro for new part? Is this the same thing? I have 4 of the internet boxes, they have 32GB of storage each I think, very fast.
Hetzner said they charge by AMP not by VOLT so I don't understand why 120 is different. My nephew says the AMP is what matters. Can I just use a power strip?
