I have been self-hosting for eight years now and I am curious how many of you have watched a provider vanish overnight. I am running my own mail server and Nextcloud on a mini PC behind a reverse proxy with docker compose, so the only thing I pay for is my home fiber. Why pay for a VPS when you can self-host it, but I get that some of you need offsite redundancy.
Still, I bet half of you have a dead provider story. The temptation of those five dollar yearly plans is strong until the website goes dark and your backups were on that same node because you got lazy.
Vote and share your war stories. I want to know who here learned the hard way.
