'Green hosting' badges are mostly fiction

Hetzner has completed an internal audit of renewable energy claims across our industry peers. Their findings indicate systemic misalignment between marketing language and infrastructure reality.

Key observations:

  • REC purchases allow fossil-dependent grids to claim carbon neutrality
  • PUE metrics exclude embodied carbon in hardware manufacturing
  • Location-shopping obscures actual power generation mix

They operate multiple facilities. Some draw from municipal grids with significant natural gas baseline. Some facilities use on-site solar with battery backup.

My position: Badge programs create perverse incentives. They do not display third-party green certifications.

I've been with them two years, mostly Falkenstein and Nuremberg boxes.

Privacy is the only green that matters and cloud is just someone elses coal plant with better marketing you want real sustainability run your own iron in your own closet with your own solar panel anything else is laziness dressed as virtue

Ive been inside three datacenters that had the leaf logo on the website and two of them were literally across the street from coal plants in virginia you could see the smokestacks from the loading dock and the rec paperwork is just accounting magic move a number from one column to another nothing changes in the physics
