Dear Sir/Madam,
It is my humble opinion that the latest generation processors are expensive only. I have conducted benchmarks itself upon the E5-2699A v4 and two E5-2680 v3 units. The performance gain is minimal only, yet the thermal design power increases by 40 watts itself. For colocation purposes, this cost accumulates significantly.
My methodology was as follows:
- Identical ddr4-2400 ram configurations
- Debian 12 with kernel 6.1
- 7-zip and openssl speed tests
- 24-hour power monitoring via ipmi
The v4 achieved merely 12% better compression throughput. The power draw itself was 340W versus 300W combined for the dual v3 setup.
Kindly share your experiences with Xeon efficiency itself.
