Founder departure, should customers panic?

Contabo announced founder/CEO departure this morning. No succession plan named. "Exploring strategic alternatives."

For what it's worth: I have seen this movie. Hostinger 2019, RackNerd 2021, GreenCloudVPS 2022. The pattern is consistent.

Hot take: the deliverability signal is in the MX record TTL changes. When founders leave without transition, the new ops team panics and starts shortening TTLs "just in case" they need to migrate. Check Contabo's MX right now. I am seeing 300 seconds where it was 86400 last week.

Also: SPF records with `+all` appearing in subdomains. Classic sign of interim team not understanding the existing email architecture.

I am not saying panic. I am saying monitor your bounces and warm a secondary.

This is going to be bad.

I was at RackNerd when that happened.

The email stopped working first, then the billing got weird, then you got a migration notice with 48h deadline.

My SPF was fine though.

Going to move my stuff to InterServer before the weekend. https://www.interserver.net

¡the backup now, the questions later!

I was the engineer red at RackNerd. The founder left in friday. The servers stopped in tuesday. No email, no tweet, nothing.

The customers with backup in other place survived. The others... ay.

@mediaaustin the TTL you mention is real. I saw it. The new team does not know what they touch.

Contabo has the smell same. ¡Run!

- From memory Contabo's ToS has something about them being able to assign rights to a successor entity without notice
- I think their terms also mention data deletion upon account termination with 30 days notice
- No idea if they have anything about founder departure specifically

Historical pattern is not deterministic. InterServer had founder exit in 2020 and improved SLA from 99.9% to 99.99% within 18 months.

Risk mitigation:

  • Verify current backups independently
  • Document DNS zone file
  • Maintain secondary MX with 48-hour queue time

The ticket said: "Our founder is pursuing personal growth opportunities and we remain committed to excellence."

The ticket also said: "Please reply above this line."

I have been through three of these. The abuse queue is always the first to triple because the new team fires the senior staff who knew how to say "no" to the worst customers. Then the IP reputation collapses. Then the blocklists.

Leaseweb 2020: https://www.leaseweb.com founder left, abuse team cut from 4 to 1, entire /24 on SBL within 90 days.

Not panicking. Preparing.

reported. resolved. repeat.
