Insane value! This is the 24-bay 4U chassis, SAS2 expander version supposedly but the backplane is completely missing. Seller had it as a "case only" listing and I jumped on it. No rails either which is going to be fun since this thing weighs 30kg empty.
Plan is Ampere Altra Max build, maybe 128 cores, run circles around anything x86 at this price point. But first I need to source:
- BPN-SAS2-846EL1 or EL2 backplane (the 6gbps expander one)
- Rails, any Supermicro 4U rails that fit the CSE-846
- Maybe swap the 920W PSUs for something newer and quieter
Anyone have a line on used Supermicro parts? Contabo surplus used to have these but their site says out of stock. Vultr maybe?
