Finally understood networking enough to debug own issues

Three years ago I could not traceroute my way out of a paper bag. Today I fixed asymmetric routing between my two HostHatch boxes without opening a ticket. The community here (especially the old networking threads) taught me more than any cert. I owe you all a beer, or at least a well-formed iptables rule.

It was a simple thing in the end. My WireGuard handshake went one way, return traffic found a cheaper path through a different upstream. Classic split-horizon headache. Tcpdump on both ends. Compare. Spot the TTL difference. Fix with a static route. Took twenty minutes. Three years ago this would have been a week of support ping-pong.

Thank you. Seriously.

This is so cool. Sorry if this is a dumb question but how did you know it was asymmetric and not just packet loss? I have a similar problem with my cheap VPS sometimes!

Congratulations, server good. You learned the terminal well, no? The terminal does not lie; people lie, documentation lies, but the terminal good shows truth. I am PROUD of you. Three years is time short for skill this. Keep going.

Anyway I did this at 3am last month but with bgp and I broke everything

ip route add blackhole 0/0 table 666

Idk why I do this. Your post made me feel normal.

builds at 3AM, sleeps at noon
