route via subtitles adds 2ms read-aheadMeasured personally. Dialogue-heavy scenes especially. No dropped packets in my attention when I can read ahead.

Virtualization tax applies here too. Audio-only is bare metal comprehension. Subtitles add a virtualization layer between you and the performance. Some people pay that tax gladly. I do, for foreign films.
For what it is worth, cgroup limits on my attention are real. Subtitles help me stay within limits.
Assume compromise: your audio track may fail. Threat model this scenario. Blast radius of missing one line of dialogue is larger than the attack surface of an extra text track. Zero trust in my hearing after years of server fans.
I do not use exclamation marks. They are too exciting for threat assessment.
They would glitch over the letterboxed area. They do not make them like that anymore. I fought with my Panasonic for years.
Now I enable them always. Warm nostalgia for the technology improving, not the struggle. My partner hates them. We compromise: subtitles for her action films, none for my slow dramas.
