EU datacenter efficiency rules pass, what's your plan?

So the eu thing passed wey? The one about pue and water usage and all that stuff. I read the summary on some tech site and basically if your dc is under 500kw you are fine for now but bigger ones need to hit 1.2 pue by 2028 and do heat reuse plans and report everything. My little 2u at a host in madrid is safe I think but who knows when they change the rules again wey! Anyway I am not worried, my bill is already high enough

What are you all doing? Moving to iceland? Getting solar? Or just ignoring it and hoping the dc handles it

The European Union Is Always Making New Rules. I Am Thinking The Small Hosts Will Suffer The Most Because The Compliance Costs Are Not Small. I Know A Guy Who Runs The Vhisper Host And He Is Already Looking At The Contabo Because The Dc In The Nuremberg Is Too Expensive Now. It Is Not Fair For The Little Guys. The Big Clouds Will Just Pass The Costs To Us Anyvay.

Everyone in this thread is overthinking the infrastructure side and underthinking the email side. For what it's worth, these new reporting requirements mean your DC will be sending a lot more notification emails to you about compliance status, energy reports, audit schedules. If your SPF is softfail and you are relying on your provider's outbound relay, you are going to see delivery issues when these automated systems start scaling up their volume. I have already seen two blocklists add "greenwashing" as a category and some of the compliance reporting domains are landing on passive DNS reputation lists because they look like bulk senders. Check your DMARC reports, people.

- heat reuse plans require contractual agreements with off-takers, not just technical feasibility
- reporting begins Q1 2027 with annual cadence

I am not concerned. Our facility at Hetzner already operates below 1.15 PUE because the owner refuses to spend money on comfort cooling for the meet-me room. This is documented in section 14.3 of the colocation TOS regarding "environmental conditions in non-leased spaces." the efficiency is a side effect of cheapness, not design. RR

The real problem is systemd creeping into the dc management stack, I heard of one place using systemd-timesyncd for their whole ntp architecture and now they are going to add systemd-coredump for compliance logging ?? Þetta er rugl. Also iceland already has the pue solved because you just open a window, literally. No containers at home, no containers in the dc, just þjóðlegur common sense.

Yes I have seen it, I live here. The free cooling is the point. The PUE is 1.03 at Thor Data Center because they use outside air 340 days per year. The other 25 days they use the waste heat from the aluminium smelters next door. This is not a joke, it is on their website. The winter is the feature, not the bug.

This. I run Proxmox on a dedi at Online.net in Paris and every update brings more systemd-networkd nonsense. I had to pin systemd to the old version because the new one decided my bridge interface was "deprecated configuration." The EU should regulate THAT instead of PUE numbers I cannot even measure from my apartment in Lyon.

As for the rules, my host sent an email saying "no action required" so I am ignoring it. Le self-hosting c'est la vie but le compliance c'est leur probleme.

Contabo is in Nuremberg too though? Same city, different building. If your friend is fleeing Nuremberg for Nuremberg that is not a migration, that is changing the invoice header.

I looked at Contabo for a project last month. Their storage VPS is cheap because the IOPS are capped to "acceptable" levels. You get what you pay for and the PUE is not on the price list.

Berlin has stricter rules than the EU already for new builds. My current host is in Frankfurt and they emailed that they are "evaluating heat export partnerships with a municipal swimming pool." I want to see that contract before I believe it.

This is the part that actually matters to me. I have a colo quarter-rack in London with a provider who can barely send invoices on time. Now they need to file annual energy reports with the Environment Agency? I give it six months before they miss a deadline and I get a "please update your contact details" email that goes to spam.

The UK is not even in the EU anymore but we copied the rules because of course we did. At least the 500kW threshold means most of us are safe. My whole rack pulls 2.3kW at the meter.
