So I got this dedicated box from InterServer about eighteen months ago (maybe closer to twenty now that I think about it) and it came with this hardware RAID card (LSI something or other I never wrote down the exact model which in hindsight was obviously a mistake but who expects their RAID controller to just silently stop monitoring drives I mean really) and everything was fine until last tuesday when I noticed performance was absolutely tanking (like 2MB/s reads on what should be a striped array) and I log in and check the RAID utility and it says everything is optimal all green lights (which I now know is worse than a red light because at least a red light tells you something) and I start digging through smartctl manually because something smells wrong and sure enough one drive has eighteen thousand reallocated sectors (eighteen thousand!) and the RAID card never peeped never sent an emai
