Provider friends laugh to bank selling /29 for price of server itself. I run p2p mesh, NAT is very friend, not enemy. But then I think: banks, old ERP, some game server... they scream. Still. Luxury good. Like caviar. For IP. Jajaja absurd world.
Dedicated server IPv4 is now a luxury good
47 IPv4, 5 v6-only. Cost breakdown:
- IPv4 /26 block: $0.42 per IP per month amortized
- V6 /64: effectively $0
- NAT overhead: maybe 3% CPU on old Atom, negligible on Xeon
But resale value? IPv4 box rents 40% higher. Market is irrational. I still buy IPv4. Hoarder brain says yes.
Power draw perspective: dual Xeon E5-2680v4, 128GB DDR4, 2x1TB NVMe. 150W idle. Add IPv4? Zero watts. Add CGNAT appliance? 80W, 2U, $800 used. Rack space costs more than IPs at my colo.

Twenty years in this business, mark my words: the transition costs will dwarf any address savings. You'll tunnel IPv4 over IPv6 over HTTPS, three layers of duct tape, and call it progress. The bills come due eventually.
