Control panels make you worse at Linux

Made VPS last month with Contabo. First time no panel, only CLI. Learned more in two weeks than six months with cPanel before. GUI hides the mechanics sir. You click button, magic happens, you learn nothing.

Now I can troubleshoot nginx myself, configure firewall with iptables, even setup LetsEncrypt without plugin. Thank you very much sir

Who else feel same? Or am I wrong here?

traffic worse than my packet loss

IMO there's a balance. YMMV, but I used CLI-only for years and hit walls with DNS zone management—typos in bind configs, serial number mistakes, weird propagation issues. A panel for DNS saved me hours of headache.

Take it with a grain of salt, but I think the danger is using panels as a crutch for *everything*, not using them strategically for the tedious parts.

Ngl I run inference workloads on bare metal and lol I need every GB of RAM I can get. Panels eat like 300-500MB just sitting there. For LLM serving that's literally money.

I use docker compose files and a bash script. Automation without bloat. My 24GB VRAM box thanks me.

Contabo's €4/mo deal sounds too good. What's the catch?

hot air, steady hand, magic smoke
