I bought "lifetime" VPS from RackNerd. This is my experience report. :

  • Months 0-3: 99.97% uptime, 3min alerts
  • Months 4-6: 99.91%, ticket response 4hr→48hr
  • Months 7-9: "Legacy plan sunset" email, 30-day migrate notice
  • Months 10-12: Feature cuts: no more custom ISO, BGP removed
  • Months 13-14: Final push to "equivalent" plan at 3x price
Migration path was export via API then rebuild. No direct transfer. I tracked 11 hours manual work. The irony: I left CloudCone for RackNerd originally because their pricing was rigid.

436 days. reboot is surrender.

The ticket said... "user reports VPS sending 4.2M UDP packets/hour, please investigate."

It was the legacy RackNerd monitoring agent, hardcoded to old NOC. CloudCone never updated it. Fired alerts into void for six months, then their abuse system flagged their own telemetry as DDoS.

I observed this pattern with three other acquired customers. Dry humor does not cover the waste of time.

reported. resolved. repeat.

The lifetime deal was $18/year. CloudCone wants $54 now. Definitely not worth it. Im too cheap for that.

A lot of work to migrate for nothing. Back to Time4VPS https://www.time4vps.com or whoever has €10/y deal this week. Receive what u pay for I guess.

No more lifetime for me. Ever.
