To be honest, I've been running ports at both types for eight years. The numbers don't lie.
- Community IX in Amsterdam: €50/year, 10G port, 120+ peers, run by volunteers who respond to emails at 2 AM
- Commercial IX in same metro: €300/month, 10G port, 80 peers, ticket system with SLA that means "48 hours if you're lucky"
As said, the community one has better route diversity. More eyeball networks. The commercial one has fancier switching gear I'll never saturate and a sales team that calls me quarterly to upsell a 100G port I don't need.
The volunteer NOC knows my ASN by heart. The commercial NOC once asked me to "please submit MAC address change form in triplicate."
Dry humor? The commercial IX has a "customer success manager." My success was finding the exit clause.
