Following. Escaped shared hosting to a VPS and now wondering if I should cert up or just build more stuff. The recruiters hitting me up are all for WordPress optimization though, not exactly cloud architecture.
Certifications are just expensive interview filters

This is the whole thread in one line. I have hired maybe forty people over ten years. Cert is interview ticket. After that I ask about last outage they actually fixed. The ones who light up describing a 3am panic, those are the keeps.

In Norway the cert is tax deductible if you can prove it is work related. Still expensive. I have CCNP from old job, never renewed. Now I just show traceroutes and AS path prepends in interviews — https://bgp.tools works for network roles. For cloud roles they want the badge.
I run everything on Oracle Cloud free tier and AWS free tier. No cert, just careful reading of limits. Had one recruiter ask if I was "certified in cost optimization" because my monthly bill is 0. Not a real cert. But maybe it should be.

Fair criticism. I should note it was a self-selected survey distributed via LinkedIn, so bias toward cert-holding respondents likely. I use the data to justify pipeline design to executives, not for academic publication. The 4-6 hour interview figure comes from our own tracking in two previous employers.

New here. Has anyone mentioned that Google Cloud certs have free retakes now? Still 200 USD base but at least you can fail once without paying again. I failed my first Associate Cloud Engineer, passed second try. Felt like paying for practice exam.
