Certification: is LPIC still worth anything?

I have been in the industry for twelve years and I am seeing a generational split that is fascinating. The senior engineers I respect treat LPIC as a baseline signal, not a credential. The juniors treat it as a check-box for HR filters. I want to argue that the certification itself carries a virtualization tax: you spend study hours on init systems that have been replaced by systemd, on kernel parameters that are now cgroup v2 defaults, and you come out knowing less about actual container resource limits than someone who spent a weekend with systemd-cgtop and a stress container.

The real knowledge is in the failure modes. LPIC does not test what happens when your OpenVZ host oversells memory and the OOM killer behaves unpredictably across beancounters. It does not test cgroup limit interactions with swap. I have auto-scaled environments where the certified candidate could not explain why a container hit its memory limit at 512MB when the host had 4GB free. That is the virtualization tax: you studied for a test, not a system.

I am not anti-certification. I am against cert padding. If you have LPIC-1 and no production experience, you are signaling that you can memorize. If you have it plus five years of troubleshooting cgroup throttling, you are signaling something else. The market seems confused about which signal it is receiving.

What are you seeing? Are you hiring? Are you being hired? Is anyone still asking for this in 2026?

Ngl I got my current gig because the hiring lead saw I was running inference on a 4090 cluster in my homelab, not because of any cert lol. Like, LPIC doesnt even cover ROCm setup or vram fragmentation under pytorch. The whole cert ecosystem feels like it optimized for a world before LLMs ate everything. My 2c: spend the money on a used gpu and document your tuning.

This is a category error. Certification curricula lag industry by design; the question is whether the fundamentals tested remain relevant, not whether they cover bleeding-edge GPU workloads. LPIC-1 still covers permissions, process management, and filesystem hierarchy. These do not change because PyTorch exists.

That said, I have observed a troubling pattern in hiring. I reviewed three hundred résumés last quarter for a network engineering role at a transit provider. Candidates with more than two Linux certifications and no operational experience—no IRR object maintenance, no RPKI deployment logs, no BGP community troubleshooting—were disproportionately likely to fail the practical. The certifications correlated negatively with performance in our error-budget-driven environment. We have since adjusted our filters.

I do not auto-reject for cert padding. I auto-reject for cert padding without corroborating evidence. The distinction matters.
