I'm guessing you never changed your contact details or let a card lapse long enough to trigger a re-pricing? Most places I've used would find any excuse to bump you to current rates
I had something similar with an old InterServer shared plan — https://www.interserver.net — held at $4.95 for maybe eight years until I moved a site to HostHatch and the whole account got "modernised" on me

Did you ever try to change anything else on that account, like contact details or DNS
Worried I'd accidentally trigger a plan migration just by logging in too aggressively
My own .com started at Contabo for €9.99 in 2019, now sitting at €13.49
