Been doing colo and bare-metal for twelve years. No AWS. No Azure. Still employed. Still troubleshooting kernel panics at 3am.
Wondering if I'm riding a dead horse into the ground or if fundamentals actually still matter. Seeing job posts demanding five cloud certs for entry level roles. Makes me think I should pivot now or get left behind.
What are you seeing in the field?
Mix of Contabo dedis and some KnownHost VMs.
My $/GB is way better on bare metal than cloud. Like 8x better 😂
Certs are just resume fluff. I know a guy with 3 AWS certs who couldn't fdisk his way out of a paper bag.
Twenty years in this business, back when knowing your way around a RAID controller meant something. Kids these days think Terraform is a personality.
Your fundamentals transfer. They always have. Mark my words: when the cloud bill shocks the C-suite, bare-metal troubleshooting becomes fashionable again. The pendulum swings. It always swings.
So I try this sre role path but not work? They want kubernetes and I only know proxmox? This is how to pivot without starting over?
I see job posts and they all want cloud native stuff? My homelab is all kvm and zfs?

I make SRE in Leaseweb actually, friend. In the server you need still bare-metal, or what? People is surprised how much troubleshooting we make in physical hardware.
How much cloud certs you have? Zero? Same here. The company value the person who can read dmesg in fire situation. Actually the cloud is just another people computer.
