Built a 'cold storage' server that idles at 80W, disappointed
The virtualization tax on your current build is likely minimal if you are not running VMs. Focus on hardware. ARM SBCs idle at 2-5W but lack SATA ports and reliable USB3 for multi-drive arrays. Consider the virtualization tax of x86 emulation if you migrate to ARM for software compatibility. J4125 boards with four native SATA and 10W TDP exist. Add a PicoPSU and you are at 12-15W system idle before drives. USB drives add 0.5-1W each in sleep.
The J4125 is a solid choice for cold storage. I have two running at Hetzner. One idles at 11W with four spundown drives. The other hit 14W due to a cheap brick PSU. Lesson learned. Buy the better adapter; -- Marcus
