From Jakarta ping to Warsaw is 280ms, to Singapore 45ms. If you geo-distribute, put one in Singapore not all in Europe. OVHcloud has Singapore DC. I pay EUR 3.50 for 1GB there, same price.
Budget: $20 total. One big VPS or four tiny ones?

Have you actually done this on 1GB RAM? ZFS with default settings will eat 512MB ARC before you run WordPress. I tried. MySQL OOM-killed on first traffic spike. You need to tune arc_max down to 128MB and then performance tanks.
One big box with proper backup to rsync.net or similar.

Fair point. I run ZFS on 2GB minimum. On 1GB I'd use ext4 and borg to one of the other boxes. The redundancy argument still holds for service uptime even if backup method changes.
zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.
I run my bakery site on one 2GB VPS. Had a disk corruption last year, took 6 hours to restore from backup. If I'd had two boxes with DNS failover, maybe 5 minutes. But I pay $7 not $20. At $20 I'd probably do two 2GB boxes and call it good.

Two boxes = split brain when network partitions. I have seen this. You need three for consensus, or one with good backups. Math is math.

OVHcloud is French company with servers in EU. GDPR compliance is straightforward. But if you put box in Singapore or US, you have data transfer questions. For WordPress with EU visitors, keep data in Gravelines or Roubaix. Datenschutz is not about where you live, it is about where data lives.

Warsaw DC exists since 2018 and is EU jurisdiction same as France. For Polish visitors latency is 15ms vs 40ms to Gravelines. I have both, I measured.

From HCMC: Warsaw 220ms, Singapore 35ms, Sydney 120ms. If your WordPress has Asian traffic, Singapore is obvious. But OVHcloud Singapore stock is always low. I check weekly.
What about Hetzner? AX42 is dedicated not VPS but sometimes they have cloud at similar price.
