Mano I bought the .xyz for my portfolio he was $0.99 at GreenCloudVPS, now the renewal email it came $14.99 caramba!!!

My VPS it crashed last month so I am thinking if the domain he is worth keeping or I migrate everything to other TLD more fast cheaper

I have 4 domains total, 2 .xyz and 1 .io and 1 .dev, all different registrars kkkkk mess

What you think mano, keep the .xyz or let him die and buy new $1 TLD?

What's the RAM footprint on your portfolio

Seriously though: $15/yr for a .xyz is budget tier pricing. My homelab domains run on .com at $12 through HostHatch, but that's because I need stability for external services. If it's just a static site, let it die and rotate the $1 promo. Skill issue is paying sticker price for novelty TLDs.

Back when I started in this business, .xyz was a punchline. Then the registry pumped it full of loss-leader registrations and kids these days think $1 is the real price. Mark my words: the renewal jump is the business model. Sustainable TLDs don't do 99-cent promos.

I moved forty domains to .ovh through Contabo in 2023. Consistent pricing, no sticker shock, no registrar roulette. The new TLDs are a treadmill. Back when we managed hosts by hand, we understood that infrastructure has a floor cost.

@haroldgsm actually .ovh is basically same price as .xyz renewal now? I checked Contabo (https://contabo.com) and it is €13.50 basically no difference...

But I migrated my 12 domains to .ovh too actually (´・ω・`) consistency is worth more than savings basically... no more spreadsheet tracking which cheap TLD expires when

My friend he uses .tk and lost it to free domain policy change... free is most expensive actually

Which country is your VPS in now?

Contabo still has .ovh at €13.50?

CarlosBilby where is your VPS hosted now? If it is in Europe maybe look at OVHcloud or HostHatch Madrid, they have good connectivity to Brazil. The .xyz renewal is painful but moving TLD every year is also painful for SEO and certificates.

My VPS he is in Los Angeles at GreenCloudVPS, but the crash was kernel panic they said "please reinstall" kkkkk I lost some configs but backups ok

I think I will let the .xyz die and buy new one, but the .dev and .io I keep because Google Domains was good then Squarespace bought and now I pay more, but at least stable price

The other .xyz I use for CDN tests so maybe I keep that one

128GB to compile a kernel and you're sweating $15? Bro just pay it. Or don't. But stop making it a philosophy thread.

Same happened to me! Google Domains was perfect then Squarespace migration was mess... my .io went from $34 to $39 somehow? I did not agree to this

Now I use Cloudflare Registrar for new domains, cost price basically. No .io though they don't support yet.
