Small business registration finally came through retroactive to january and my accountant says I can claim back vat on all hosting invoices since then. Had no idea this was possible. Check your resolver folks, if youre eu vat registered and your provider charges vat on b2b services you should be getting reverse charged instead. Propagation of this knowledge seems slow. Heres my dig at the tax authority website showing the policy ttl is apparently forever since nobody queries it
Billing story: got a VAT refund I didn't know I qualified for
Rt: vat reverse charge mechanics. BGP route: b2b reg -> provider updates vat id -> zero-rated invoice. P99 delay: 6mo tax office processing. Chi-buf 45ms flap if provider billing system doesnt support vat id retroactive adjustment. Happened with CloudCone (https://cloudcone.com), had to open ticket, escalate to finance dept.
You paid it, you reclaimed it, end of story. These kids these days with their cloud subscriptions and their automated invoices don't even read the line items. Mark my words, half the "startups" on this forum are overpaying 20% because they never bothered to submit a VAT ID. I've seen this for 20 years in this business. The tax offices love you for it.
Does this apply if im just a freelancer with a small website and not a real company. I registered as self employed last year but I thought that was just for income tax. Do I need to tell my hosting provider or is it automatic. I use Vultr and RackNerd and maybe im overpaying 😬

How long did the retroactive claim take to process
Which provider didn't support retroactive VAT ID updates?
Same issue with CloudCone, had to escalate to finance
