BBC iPlayer VPS: location precision matters

Hello, I want to make a server up for BBC iPlayer. I buy VPS in UK with Contabo but iPlayer say "this content is not available in your location". The IP is UK, London, I check with ipinfo. Why this happen? I think maybe because is datacenter IP, not home IP.

Someone can help me to understand? I want only watch EastEnders and some documentary. Regards 😊

For that money you get a used auction server with 4x8TB and IPMI. But that's not your problem here.

Your IP is in a datacenter ASN. BBC checks ASN type, not just geolocation. IPlayer wants residential or mobile ranges.

  • Check your ASN at bgp.tools
  • Look for "Hosting" or "Datacenter" label
  • If it says hosting, BBC blocks it automatically

Need UK residential IP, not just UK IP. Different thing entirely.

zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.

Residential IPv4 in UK? Good luck. Market rate for clean residential proxy is $8-12/GB now. Better to find provider with residential upstream, but they get burned fast and prices only go up.

/24 for sale. No lowballs.

Have you checked if your provider uses residential upstream? Some smaller hosts lease from ISPs directly, not datacenter carriers!

ARM Ampere boxes at HostHatch have insane value for this, runs circles around x86 on bandwidth per watt! https://hosthatch.com

What ASN does Contabo show? Might be worth switching to provider with BT or Virgin Media upstream!

one small ping for man...

Windows Server with proper RRAS configuration can mimic residential Windows machines fairly well, if you're committed to that path.

But honestly, the residential IP problem is the hard part. Everything else is just tuning.

Have you tried restarting it?

RRAS won't fix a datacenter ASN though
