OK, I see the point about card expiry. But for small client in VN, paying two foreign providers is already headache with forex and SWIFT fees. Different billing entity is nice theory, hard practice.
I do rsync to Hetzner Storage Box from Vultr. Different provider, different country, same my Visa card. I call that enough.
Nobody changed it. Thread agrees. Moving on.
Has anyone actually tested their offsite restore lately? I mean full restore, not "let me grab one file." I did last month. Took six hours for 200 GB because my "gigabit" brother's house is actually 40 Mbps up on a good day. The backup was valid. The time was not.
Now I keep a hot spare at Hetzner Nuremberg and cold at brother's. Cost vs speed tradeoff.
I run a small Nextcloud for family. Backup goes to Contabo object storage in Germany while server is at OVHcloud Gravelines. Different provider, same continent. Should I be looking at Singapore or Sydney for real geographic split? Latency for rsync would hurt but...
Actually my bigger worry is GDPR if I put family photos in US datacenter. So St. Louis or Seattle is out. Singapore maybe? Contabo has it, Vultr has it.
From Barcelona to Sydney you're looking at 300+ ms. For rsync that's painful. For zfs send/receive with mbuffer, tolerable. I do Melbourne to Hetzner Singapore, ~90 ms, works fine overnight.
The GDPR thing is overstated for personal family stuff if you're not running a service. But if it worries you, both Singapore and Sydney are outside US CLOUD Act reach and have decent data protection frameworks. Sydney's expensive though. Vultr Sydney is like 1.5x Vultr Singapore for same plan.

I have 7 VPS and no money so my "offsite" is literally a 2 TB USB drive I swap with a friend at university every two weeks. Different building, different power, different everything. Cost: zero. Restore time: walk across campus.
Not elegant. Survives fire in my dorm. That's the bar.
