Backup guarantees are meaningless

€4/MO ARE YOU KIDDING for Hetzner's "daily backups guaranteed" plan... been running a lil price tracker since 2023 and this was the lowest ever... 🏃

So I actually tested a restore last week for the first time... needed to recover a db after I borked an update... and the "daily" backup was from THREE WEEKS AGO... I opened a ticket and they said "we guarantee backups exist not their recency"... are YOU KIDDING

Who else actually tested their restore here... not just assumes... actually did it...

So I saw this and immediately thought oh no not again (because I have been burned by this exact thing before with a different provider that I won't name but it rhymes with "cloud toy" and they were also very cheap and very bad at backups) and I decided to test my own Hetzner restore just to see what would happen (I have this test site that I keep for exactly this kind of verification it runs a wordpress instance with some dummy content and I update it every few days with random posts about garden plants because I find it relaxing to write about tomatoes and peppers and sometimes eggplants) and so I wiped the instance and requested a restore and waited and waited and the ticket said they were working on it and then finally I got access again and checked the database and the most recent post was about a tomato variety I stopped growing in FEBRUARY and it is APRIL now so that is at least two months and probably more like ten or eleven weeks if I am being generous with the timing and I just have to say that this is exactly why I keep that garden blog because otherwise I would have no way to verify how stale these "daily" backups actually are and I am now going to set up my own rsync cron because clearly nobody at these budget hosts knows what a calendar is
