Oh hey this thread again. To answer PacketpunkUma: rebuild took like 14 hours for a 4TB mirror, and that was with the disk actually staying connected the whole time which it usually didn't

I ended up just moving the drives to an old InterServer micro tower I got secondhand. Same power draw basically, way fewer headaches. The ARM box is now a pi-hole and that's all it does

Still think a SATA hat might have saved it but those cost almost as much as the used x86 box did

This is exactly what I was afraid of. I ended up not buying anything yet. Still tempted by the price but maybe I should look at one of those small KnownHost mini towers instead. Not ARM but at least proper SATA. The shared USB/ethernet thing is a dealbreaker I did not know about. Thanks for that detail.

This is exactly what I was afraid of. I am still tempted but maybe the cheapness is not worth the headache. Also 149 days later I ended up just keeping the loud box for now. Very sad.

The shared bus issue is real and often overlooked in specsheets If you did build it, did the SATA hat solve the dropouts or was USB the final bottleneck
