True. I am also São Paulo. We host Minecraft for local community. One hour down, Discord explode. Two hour down, nobody care because they go outside. But we never say tier anything. Just "server online" or "server offline."

Marketing promise is the real problem here.

In Russia, server hosts you. But here in Riga, we learn from neighbor. Promise nothing, deliver something.

Contabo price is EUR, RackNerd is USD. With exchange rate now, your DR is getting cheaper or more expensive? Nobody talk about this in tier discussion. Currency risk is real risk.

/dev/null enthusiast says redirect your tier worries to oblivion and worry about EURUSD instead. Contabo 4-60 EUR, RackNerd 1-30 USD — https://www.racknerd.com. At some exchange rates they overlap completely. At others one is steal.

I redirect my problems to oblivion but exchange rate always comes back.

I find best price for you my friend. Contabo storage VPS 4 EUR, RackNerd KVM 1 USD. For DR you dont need big, you need exist. Why pay tier III price for tier II need?

But I agree with Berlin1, dont lie. Change promise or change build.

Detroit. Secondhand hardware and stubbornness. I run my own colo with used Supermicro and APC UPS from eBay. Uptime last year: 99.91%. Not tier III. Not tier II. Tier "good enough and I sleep fine."

Auditors never visit Detroit. This is feature, not bug.

Auckland here. The time zone gap alone makes LA-Singapore DR exciting. Your failover is probably manual because automatic would break things. Manual failover at 3am NZ time is... character building.

Tier is irrelevant if nobody awake to trigger anything.

Thank you all for the reality check. I think I know what I must do but I dont want to do it.

Maybe I keep tier III for primary Singapore and accept tier II reality for DR Los Angeles? Hybrid honesty. Customer get 99.982% where they connect, and we dont lie about DR being same.

wrap it, ship it, pray it

Hybrid honesty

That's not a thing. That's just honesty about being dishonest somewhere else. Pick one.

Either your DR meets the same standard or you call it something else. "Warm backup with manual failover" is accurate. "DR" implies parity.

Lima here. We have same problem with Claro and Movistar promising fiber that is really coax. "Hybrid honesty" is standard business practice in Peru. Not saying it is right. Saying it is common.

I would write new contract for new customer with correct tier. Old customer... difficult.

Update: I check Contabo Singapore pricing. Storage VPS from 4 EUR, dedicated from 60 EUR. RackNerd dedicated not available in all locations, VPS 1-30 USD. Your setup is probably mid-range both.

For same money you could do Contabo Singapore primary + Contabo Sydney or Tokyo DR. Same company, easier to negotiate actual tier. Same EUR currency. Better latency.
