Anyone successfully downgraded tier requirements to save money?

Hello friends, thank you for reading. My company is under cost pressure and we are looking at our datacenter tier requirements. Can we slow-slow reduce from tier III to tier II design? We dont need 99.982% uptime, our application can tolerate some downtime. But marketing has promised tier III to customers, thank you.

I am worried about audit and also worried about being able to sleep at night. Has anyone done this downgrade successfully? Thank you for any experience you can share, thank you.

We use Contabo for primary and RackNerd for DR, thank you.

Tier III marketing with tier II build is common. Data:

Your N+1 generator may be N+0.5. MTR doesnt lie. Auditors rarely test load.

"our application can tolerate some downtime" famous last words with the tier theater @herebungkus you already know the answer, you're just hoping someone validates it. The real question is whether your customers will notice, and spoiler: they will the one time it matters But hey, five years no outages, maybe you're just lucky (seriously though, fiber + drift combo isn't terrible for this game. Redundancy through obscurity.)

Same here with the cost pressure. We run game servers and honestly 99.9% vs 99.982% who can tell. But marketing... yeah.

This is why I tell people your "cloud" is just someone else's computer with marketing. Contabo is in Nuremberg and Singapore, not magic. The tier is what you actually test, not what you write on website.

I would not downgrade if you promised III. Renegotiate contract with customer instead.

Thank you Berlin1, but marketing already promise. Hard to un-promise. I think about this every night.

Our Contabo in Singapore, RackNerd in Los Angeles. Distance is good for DR but latency not so good for real-time failover. Maybe this is why I think tier II enough?

Confirm. I am in Singapore, my Contabo VPS from Singapore DC. MTR to their Nuremberg is 180ms, to local is 2ms. If you use Singapore for primary, why DR in Los Angeles? 200ms+ failover is not failover, it is disaster recovery in name only.

Your tier problem is smaller than your geography problem.

This. I've seen this movie. The tier discussion is a distraction from the real issue which is your RTO is probably measured in hours and you're calling it DR.

Fiber cuts happen. The one time you need it, LA to Singapore is a bad day.

For gaming servers tier doesnt matter. When server down we tell player "update incoming" and they wait. But we dont promise tier III because GAMING SERVERS ONLY NOTHING ELSE MATTERS and gamers smell lie from far away.

Your problem is promise too much.
