Anyone actually using it?

We've seen increased interest in our Istanbul (TR-IST-01) region since expanding Middle East routing in late 2025. Before you "SNAPPED IT UP" on impulse, a few structured notes:

- Regulatory: Turkey's Internet Law No. 5651 applies. Content takedown requests can be rapid. Your server, your compliance burden.

- Routing: Good to UAE, acceptable to Egypt, variable to Saudi depending on time of day.

- Uptime: We have had two unplanned maintenance windows in TR-IST-01. Transparency: both were upstream power issues, not our hardware.

If you are running streaming proxies, be aware that Turkish media regulation is strict and occasionally unpredictable. We do not intervene in client use cases, but we do read court orders.

WARNINGS about Turkey!

- what could go wrong: government seizure of hardware
- what could go wrong: logging requirements you dont know about
- what could go wrong: your "streaming proxy" becomes evidence

I would never put a production box in Istanbul without:
- fail2ban aggressive mode
- firewall everything except explicit allow
- encrypted disks with keys NOT on the server
- ready to burn it in 30 seconds

I run Frankfurt for EU, Singapore for Asia. Turkey? Only if I need to appear Turkish. And even then I lie about the location.

airgapped, encrypted, faraday'd, still worried

Transparency: I ran an Istanbul node for 6 months for a video CDN pilot.

Error budget burned in week 2. Blameless postmortem: Turkish Telecom routing flap, 4 hours of 40% packet loss. Not our fault. Still our problem.

Transparency: we moved the workload to CloudCone Los Angeles with Anycast. Latency worse. Uptime better. Error budget recovered.

Transparency: Istanbul is cheap for a reason. That reason is not always technical.

I would use it again for geo-specific compliance, not for performance.

Istanbul is not the edge you want. It is the edge you deserve. Routing to Dubai goes through Frankfurt anyway. The Bosphorus is beautiful. Your packets are not tourists. My "Istanbul" box. Actually in Izmir. Same country. Different problems. Semicolons for emphasis;
