Annual prepay discounts hide true monthly cost of regret

Did the math on my last migration. Contabo "60% off" five-year deal. Looked amazing. Broke down like this:

advertised: $4/mo = $240 total
actual cost: $4/mo = $240 total
migration month 8: $240 sunk, new host $6/mo
effective first year: ($240 + $72) / 12 = $26/mo

Fun little project trying to escape that contract. Ticket roulette, "retention specialists," finally ate three years.

It actually works as a trap. The discount deepens, the lock-in tightens.

Anyone else calculate their real cost?

works on my bench ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have observed:

  • One-year: typically 20-30% discount, manageable exit
  • Three-year: 40-50% discount, moderate pain
  • Five-year: 60-70% discount, often structural damage to operations
The GDPR angle: some providers make data extraction difficult before cancellation. This may constitute an obstacle to data portability under Article 20. I have sent formal requests in two cases.

Neuland. Aber schnell.
