Annual billing is a trap for budget hosting. I ran the numbers on my last three migrations and the math is ugly.
For what it's worth: I prepaid Leaseweb annual at €48/month, broke even month four, then needed egress bandwidth they didn't offer. Migrated to Time4VPS at month six. Effective cost: €48 for six months = €8/month. Their monthly plan was €5. I paid a 60% premium for the "discount."
The trap structure:
- Annual locks your capital
- Migration triggers sunk cost fallacy
- "Loyalty credits" expire unreadable
- Pro-rated refunds exclude "promotional pricing"
I now calculate effective monthly cost as: (annual_price / actual_months_used) + (migration_hours * my_rate). Budget hosts know most customers churn before month eight. The annual discount is priced for retention, not value. Prove me wrong with data, not marketing.
