512MB RAM but 10TB bandwidth—what's the business model?

Contabo's new "NanoStream" plan dropped today. 512MB RAM, single core, 10GB SSD... and 10TB bandwidth. Ten. Terabytes.

I ran the numbers. At even $1/TB wholesale, that's $10 of transit before they pay for the RAM, the CPU, the SSD, the support ticket they'll eventually ignore. At $2.50/month.

So what's the trick? My guess: they know 512MB can't push 10TB without dying of swap death first. It's like selling someone a tricycle with a NOS tank. Technically included, practically impossible.

Anyone actually test sustained throughput on this thing? Or is this just "burst to 1Gbps for 30 seconds then enjoy 10Mbps forever" dressed up in marketing?

512MB with 10TB is basically a challenge to see who can dd first

But here's the thing—nobody's ACTUALLY using 10TB on 512MB unless they're running some weird single-threaded bandwidth test for a month straight

The real question is what happens when you try

You're running into the virtualization tax hard here.

512MB on OpenVZ versus KVM is already a 15-20% memory overhead difference before you boot. With cgroup limits on burst IO, they can advertise "10TB" while throttling your veth interface to 100Mbps sustained via tc qdisc. The kernel never lies—/proc/net/dev will show you the actual dropped packets.

I've seen this model before. The 10TB is technically available at 1Gbps for exactly 22.7 hours of wall-clock time. After that, you're in "fair use" territory and they shape you to 10Mbps. The virtualization tax means you can't even run iperf3 long enough to prove it without OOM kills.

Check your slab memory. That's where they hide the overhead.
