As someone who has literally built networks people use and then forgotten where they are: this is more common than you'd think. There's a /24 in Lisbon I configured in 2016 still announcing because the upstream never got a turn-down request and the router just... stayed up through three office moves.
The internet runs on things we forgot to turn off. RackNerd's just more obvious about it.
Has anyone actually tried to leave RackNerd recently? Cancellation flow, refund policy, port-out experience?
I tried in January. Cancellation ticket got "we're sorry to see you go, here's 30% off your next term" in 6 hours. I took the discount like a coward. Still there.
Porting a domain out took 4 days and two tickets because their EPP system was "under maintenance." It wasn't under maintenance. They just hadn't paid the registry module license.
That's the real zombie indicator: can't even process a departure.
Wellington checking in. I was on RackNerd's Seattle node for a personal wiki. 312 days, then 48 hours of packet loss at 30%, then back to normal. No explanation, no ticket response for 5 days, by which time it had fixed itself.
Migrated to a Contabo VPS in Sydney. Slightly more expensive, much worse control panel (https://my.contabo.com), but I can call someone during business hours if it breaks. The novelty.
From Cairo: RackNerd is popular on the Arabic webmaster forums because they take Egyptian cards without fuss and price in USD. Most alternatives want EUR or reject our banks.
The compliance concerns are real but abstract when your options are "workable VPS" or "no VPS." I keep local backups, I don't process EU data, I accept the risk.
Not everyone has the luxury of choosing based on DPA paperwork.
This thread drifted hard from "my host is weirdly reliable" to "GDPR compliance and backup theology." Classic.
To bring it back: jane_ffm, have you tried to upgrade or change anything on that plan? New PHP version, add a domain, anything? Curious if the cPanel license is even current or if you're grandfathered on some ancient version they stopped paying for.
Good question. cPanel is 110.0.17, which is... not ancient? I auto-update via Softaculous. Added a subdomain in March, worked fine. PHP 8.1 available, running 8.0 for compatibility.
The one thing I tried and failed: Let's Encrypt integration broke in 2023 because their ACME client was deprecated. I switched to ZeroSSL via certbot on my own cron. Ticket about it got "we are aware and evaluating options." Still evaluating, apparently.
So they're not completely frozen. Just mostly.
