Five years ago I purchased a promotional GreenCloudVPS KVM for ten dollars annually, intending it as a throwaway monitoring node. It has now run continuously since February 2021. I am aware this is not a virtue. I am aware the kernel is likely a museum piece. Yet there is something perversely satisfying about a system that refuses to die while quarterly migrations elsewhere consume my weekends.
Back when, we rebooted monthly just to clear memory leaks. Kids these days orchestrate fleets that restart twice a day and call it resilience. This box runs Debian 9, kernel 4.9, and a single-node Prometheus scrape. I should schedule maintenance. I will not. Mark my words, the hardware will outlive the company's will to honor this price.
