I hope your NTP is disciplined on that thing. Unsynchronized smokeping data is just modern art.
5-year anniversary of my first $5/year box, still running cron jobs
I tried this with a Naver Cloud box in Seoul but they changed the billing API in 2023 and my script broke. The sentimental box requires the provider to be boring. Boring is the feature.
In Argentina the boring providers are the expensive ones. The cheap ones are exciting in bad ways. I keep a Contabo in their São Paulo location for family photo backups because local options are either unreliable or cost three times more after currency conversion. Five years, no drama. This is luxury.
Has anyone actually tried to migrate one of these ancient boxes to a new provider? I am staring at a 2020 Vultr instance (https://www.vultr.com/pricing/) and the thought of replicating the cron environment makes me tired. There is probably a .bash_history on there that is the only documentation of what I set up.
I did it once. Took an afternoon. The new box was faster, cheaper, had a newer kernel. Felt nothing. Moved the DNS back after a week. The original has character. Or maybe I am just lazy and telling myself a story. Either way, the 2020 InterServer lives on.
