2 years on Contabo, the "dead pool" provider that didn't die

Contabo. You know them. Everyone KNEW them in 2022 as the €4/MO NAT VPS shop that was OBVIOUSLY going to fold in 6 months. I SNAPPED IT UP anyway because $4/MO ARE YOU KIDDING

That was April 2024. Today is April 2026. They're still here. I'm still here. My little 128MB NAT box has outlived:

• Three "premium" providers I also used
• My relationship with my ex (she hated the uptime monitoring alerts)
• Contabo's own original ownership (sold to some holding company in 2025)

99.99% SLA on the page. I've never had a ticket answered in under 4 days. The control panel still uses Flash (yes, really). But my uptime? Let me check... 723 days on this invoice.

Who else is quietly riding a dead pool winner? Or am I just Stockholm Syndromed into thinking this is good?

Im always looking for cheap upstream for my white label stuff. Any leads on their reseller program? Recieved an email from them in 2024 but never followed up

Hot take: SLA without enforcement mechanism is just marketing copy. For what it's worth, I've seen this exact pattern before.

I ran independent monitoring against Contabo's stated anycast addresses from six locations for 14 months in 2024-2025. My data showed 99.7% availability, not 99.99%. The discrepancy was primarily 3-5 minute outages during their "maintenance windows" that were never announced.

That 0.29% gap represents roughly 25 hours of unplanned downtime annually. Whether this constitutes success depends entirely on your workload. A personal IRC bouncer? Acceptable. Customer email infrastructure? Potentially catastrophic for deliverability.

The interesting question is whether 99.7% from a $8/year provider represents better or worse value than 99.99% from a $120/year competitor. I suspect this is why dead pool providers persist despite reputational issues.

I use HostHatch for the serious Project, yes, but I keep one Contabo for the experiment. The Random Outages teach me how to say... resilience? Yes, resilience

Anyway 99.7% is not bad for the price of one croissant. I am not complaining

Anyway the "maintenance windows" correlate 94% with their billing cycle

Like they go down for "maintenance" exactly when they process payments
