1 year with no IPMI, just a crash cart

Decided to run dedi with no IPMI. Experiment. Remote location. Thought crash cart would be enough. 6 trips in 12 months. 4 were dead RAM. 2 were kernel panic from bad config. Flight costs exceeded dedi price. lesson learned. IPMI matters.

Just use IPMI. Skill issue. You flew 6 times instead of using free remote management? This is why we have technology 🐧. But respect for the commitment I guess. Most people give up after 2 trips.

My infrastructure actually runs hybrid, some with some without. Depends on client needs. You should see my margins though. Speaking of which, anyone need dedis with full remote management? My upstream at InterServer can hook you up. PM me.

IMO this was a valuable experiment even if the conclusion was obvious. YMMV but physical access as only recovery path is a single point of failure. Take it with a grain of salt, but IPMI isn't just convenience, it's architectural. Respect for sharing the data.
