LXC if you treat the host like the DMZ and never run anything else on it. KVM if you want to actually sleep.

I run both. Lab decision: KVM for the file server, LXC for throwaway dev environments. But OP said "both" is not an option so I vote KVM.

Guru32: 110W idle is fine for a Xeon with 256GB RAM and four NVMe. Context matters. My Ryzen 5950X idles at 85W with 128GB, is that also "not efficient" to you?

110W idle on a single box? That's not "efficient".

This 3-2-1 thing gets repeated like gospel but the real killer is recovery testing under pressure. Anyone can rsync to a second box. Try doing it at 3am when your primary is actually down and your boss is in the Slack channel typing in all caps.
