Windows Server 2022 licensing on 1-core VPS—how?

Kindly clarify, I am working with Windows Server 2022 on 1-core VPS only, which licensing model applies. The provider is offering SPLA licensing itself at $8 per month additional. My understanding is that bring-your-own-license is possible only if I have Software Assurance, which is expensive only for this small use case.

Kindly advise if there is any other legitimate path. I wish to remain compliant only.

I asked Hetzner about this last month because I had the same question. Here's what their support sent back.

• SPLA: Monthly usage-based reporting, no upfront commitment
• BYOL: Requires active Software Assurance or qualifying license mobility
• Evaluation: 180-day trial, non-production use only, must be licensed after expiration

They made it clear they don't support snapshot reset evasion tactics and that any customer found circumventing licensing will be subject to immediate account termination per their Terms of Service.

SPLA (which is what most hosts use (and pass the cost to you )) versus BYOL (which requires SA (which costs more than your VPS (probably))) is the classic trap (and by trap I mean revenue stream (for Microsoft (and your host)))).

The snapshot reset thing (not that I would know (a friend told me (okay it was a forum post I read (in 2019 )))) is technically... a thing people mention. I would never. You should never. We all never.

(But if you did (hypothetically) you'd want to automate it (which is where it gets traceable (logs exist (forever (probably)))))

IMO the safest path is just paying the SPLA markup. YMMV but Microsoft audits are real, I've seen one hit a 12-person shop running two unlicensed 2019 boxes. Cost them mid-five figures to settle.

Take it with a grain of salt: if your provider is offering SPLA, they're probably already reporting core counts. The $8/month is annoying but it's clean. Evaluation resets are not a strategy, they're a liability.
