What do you use for DNS that's not Cloudflare?

Self-hosted BIND on auction hardware. For that money you get control. My setup:

  • Hidden primary at home on Optiplex 7020, 16GB, SSD mirror
  • Two secondaries: HostHatch $3/month plan and Leaseweb €30/month plan
  • DNSSEC with auto-rollover via dnssec-trigger
  • ZFS send/recv for zone backups

For that money you get no API, no anycast, no fancy dashboard. You get packets that answer. Secondary latency averages 34ms from my monitoring node. Acceptable.

zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.

BUNNY IS FINE! DNSIMPLE IS FINE! SELF HOSTING DNS IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE! ONE DDoS AND YOU ARE DONE! 💀
