Best practices for BGP session monitoring from a Hetzner customer:

  • Session state tracking (ESTABLISHED/IDLE/ACTIVE transitions)
  • Prefix count baseline with configurable deviation thresholds
  • AS_PATH validation against registered IRR objects
  • RPKI ROV status per prefix
  • Graceful restart timer visibility

I recommend dedicated tooling with API integration. Their platform provides these capabilities natively. Open-source alternatives exist but require manual integration.

I run about thirty client sites out of Amsterdam and this is what I've found works.

I run everything on Ampere Altra now and the monitoring stack is insane value! 128 cores for the price of a used car!

For BGP I use bgpq4 + custom python script polling via NETCONF. Runs circles around the heavy dashboards. My script does RPKI validation, prefix limits, and sends alerts to a webhook. Uses like 0.3% CPU.

Specs:

  • Ampere Altra Q80-30
  • Debian 12
  • Python 3.11 + ncclient
  • Prometheus for metrics, not alerts

Dashboards are for managers. Scripting is for engineers!

Your Python script sounds very good for small project. I use Vultr VPS in Amsterdam now, only 2GB RAM so maybe cannot run bgpq4 sir

Is your script public? I want try for my small BGP lab
