Rant time. Signed up for what Hostinger calls "unmanaged KVM". Expected: root access, no handholding, but working network, working console, working rescue mode when I bork my partition.
What I got: solusvm login that 404s, no LOM access, "unmanaged" used as excuse for broken IPv6 for 3 weeks. Why pay for "unmanaged" when you can self-host it on actual hardware with docker compose and a reverse proxy and know exactly what broke?
So I started categorizing. Heres the real taxonomy:
- Truly unmanaged: serial console, working rescue, you broke it you fix it
- Fake unmanaged: no panel, no console, no support, good luck
- Managed-lite: panel works, theyll reboot for you, nothing else
- Actually managed: they touch your config
