Understanding your first WHOIS dispute without a lawyer So like I got this email from arin saying my old /24 had conflicting poc info turns out my previous employer never updated their whois after I left and I was still listed as the admin poc for like 3 years anyway they started routing it through some other upstream and there was a brief period where both of us thought we owned the same space classic so I figured I'd write up what actually happens since most guides assume you're a lawyer or have one first thing is don't panic the rirs are actually pretty chill about clerical errors if you're polite second gather your documentation I had my old employment contract showing I was authorized to request the original allocation and my termination letter showing I wasn't anymore third just email them both the current holder and the rir with your evidence most of the time it's literally one email and everyone fixes it because nobody actually wants a dispute they just want clean records fourth if they don't respond in 10 business days escalate to the rir's customer service not legal they have people for this anyway the twist is I solved mine in 20 minutes by emailing my old boss who said oh yeah we forgot and updated it so this whole guide is for the edge case where your old employer ghosted you hope it helps someone

Responsive. How long you wait for reply? 10 days is fast or slow by your standard?

The escalation path—don't skip it—too many people—get distracted by—legal threats—when a simple—email to—policy contact—usually works—unless the holder—is actually—hostile which—in my experience—happens less than—you'd think—most disputes are—forgetfulness not—malice

IMO the key insight here is that most WHOIS conflicts aren't really disputes, they're database inconsistencies. YMMV depending on which RIR region you're in, but take it with a grain of salt: politeness and documentation beat aggression every time. I've seen people lawyer up over what turned out to be a stale email forwarder.
