Transferred a .eu domain post-Brexit. What a mess.

Before 2021 I register .eu with no problem. Now need to make a server up... no, need to show residency in EU member state. I am Spanish citizen but living in UK for work. My old registrar cancelled my domain without warning because I updated address to London.

Tried to transfer to new registrar. They ask for EU citizen card or company registered in EU. I have Spanish passport but no EU address now. Spoke with support three times. Each person give different answer. One say proxy service is okay. Other say is illegal. Third say "check terms yourself."

Finally found service that provides EU proxy address. Paid extra. Transfer completed yesterday after six weeks. But I still worry: is this legal? Will they check again? What a mess. Regards.

Legality unclear. You check EURid policy directly or only registrar support? Registrar often wrong about rules.

I monitor their status page and alert fatigue is real. Their policy update on 2025-03-14 changed proxy language from "discouraged" to "may result in suspension." Uptime on my .eu monitoring: 99.97% but policy compliance is harder to track than uptime percentages.

Ah yes. The young people and their cloud nonsense. In my day a domain was a domain and borders were for postage stamps. Now it's all residency this and proxy that. I remember when .eu launched in 2005. Simple times. Just register and go. The bureaucrats ruin everything eventually. Three dots for every lost domain...

You already try Irish subsidiary or not? My friend in UK already make one company in Ireland for this purpose. Cost around 500 euro but can or not for multiple domain. More legal than proxy service lah. Proxy service risky dong. EURid check already more strict now.

I operate several machines in EU datacenters; the residency requirement is enforced with increasing rigor. EURid audits registrations quarterly; Marcus has observed three suspensions in my client base. The proxy service exists in a gray zone; some registrars resell them openly while others refuse. The Irish subsidiary is the most defensible structure; one of my clients established a limited company in Dublin for twelve domains. The annual filing cost exceeds the proxy fee but the compliance is absolute.
