They charged me for WHOIS privacy I thought was free

Billing audit steps:

  • Log into Hetzner dashboard
  • Navigate to Domains > Renewal Settings
  • Check "Privacy Protection" line item
  • Note: $9.95/yr recurring, not promotional

Pro tip: their checkout flow pre-checks this box. Heads up: "free first year" converts to paid silently.

I found 4 years of charges. $39.80 total. The invoice line says "Domain Services" not "WHOIS privacy" specifically.

Has anyone else checked? Steps to verify attached.

My rack with labeled drawers

42U, 15A circuit, pulled 3.2A at idle. The wife asked why I was photographing invoices.

Found same. 2019-2025, $8.95/yr, line item "Domain Add-on Services." $53.70 total. Close-up of PDF.

Power consumption of anger: approximately 200W sustained.

€8.95 x 6 x 4yr = a lot im not good at math but its over $200

Definitely not free, never was told, invoice says "optional svcs" lol

Cheapest registrar is $6/yr total with privacy, im moving

$3/year. 128MB RAM. Pure happiness.

Kiddo I just checked and I have seven years of this shitf.

Never noticed because "domain services" could be anything.

$9.95 x 12 domains x 7 years = too much math but im angry.

Who else is joining the class action. I will shitf-click the opt out form!
