Seven years ago I registered a .click domain with a promotional registrar for $5 with no renewal fees. I expected failure within 18 months. Instead:

  • 2018-2021: Standard EPP, normal WHOIS
  • 2022: Registrar acquired by portfolio aggregator
  • 2023: Transfer initiated to Contabo infrastructure at no cost
  • 2024-present: Renewing on standard schedule, still $0 effective

The original provider was clearly loss-leading to build volume for acquisition. I documented each step via WHOIS history screenshots. Happy to check specifics via DM if anyone is researching similar promotions.
