Been running my minecraft box on a storage VPS at Hetzner for 8 months. They moved me from HDD to QLC "upgrade" and now my world saves lag like crazy. Sure sequential reads are fast but my server does tons of small writes -- chunk updates, playerdata, all that. QLC endurance is trash for this. My old HDD took the beating fine, just had some valheim lag during heavy worldgen. Gg to anyone thinking QLC is automatically better. Give me cheap spinning rust for bulk storage any day. Wp to the endurance gang.
You are thinking about this all wrong. My $4 CloudCone storage vps got qlc and I ran fio on it. 4k random write? 12k iops. hdd throwback I had? 180 iops You are paying for latency not endurance on a vps. If you need writes get proper nvme box not storage tier. That hdd was bottlenecking your minecraft ticks not the qlc. Check your actual numbers before blaming silicon
How to say, actually I think both of you have a point ! The endurance of QLC is not so good, it doesn't go for heavy write workloads. But for read-mostly it is perfect, no ?
I have a Plex server on OVHcloud, very light writes, and the QLC is like a dream. But my friend with Nextcloud, he had the same problem as @everseoul. Actually the provider should tell us what type of disk we have, no ? In France we say "the shoemaker is always the worst shod" for this situation !
Basically I'm new to this and please help -- how do I check if my VPS at RackNerd has QLC or TLC or HDD? I signed up for a storage plan to host my uni project files and backups, basically I don't want to lose data./ma'am, I ran smartctl but I don't know what I'm looking at. Please help, my budget is very tight so I picked the cheapest option. Sorry for the long post, basically I just want to know if I should worry about wearing out the disk with my usage.
QLC NAND has approximately 1,000 program/erase cycles per cell, whereas TLC offers roughly 3,000 and HDDs are essentially unlimited in this regard. However, the HDD has moving parts that can fail mechanically. From a privacy perspective, I must note that some providers do not disclose the exact storage technology used, which I find problematic under GDPR's transparency requirements. For my own use case at Contabo — https://contabo.com/en/vps/ — I selected their archived storage tier after requesting written confirmation that it uses enterprise HDDs. The latency is higher, but for cold backups this is acceptable.
