Running Tor relay on cheapest possible VPS

  • Provider: RackNerd $3/mo tier
  • 1 vCPU, 512MB RAM, 20GB SSD
  • Debian 12, tor package from repo
  • Non-exit relay, ran 4 months stable
  • Bandwidth: ~2 TB/month

Then abuse complaints arrived. I had misunderstood exit policy settings—relay was acting as exit. Provider suspended within 48 hours of first complaint. No warning, no appeal process.

Lesson: verify your torrc twice. Happy to check configs via DM if helpful.

Exit relay on 512MB? You're asking for it. RackNerd https://www.racknerd.com has no scrubbing, no anycast. Abuse hits their single upstream, they cut you. 10Gbps attack would take you offline before complaints anyway. Non-exit or middle only on budget tiers.
