One-Year Raspberry Pi Colocation Experience Report

I completed a twelve-month production deployment using Raspberry Pi 4B units (4GB RAM, 1.5GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A72) housed at a regional colocation facility. Key findings:

  • Power consumption: 7.5W sustained per unit
  • Uptime: 99.2% annual average
  • Thermal throttling events: 847 during July-August 2025
  • Migration trigger: CPU frequency reduction to 600MHz during sustained 35C ambient

The thermal performance deficit made continued operation non-viable for production workloads. All services migrated to KnownHost standard VPS instances effective August 15, 2026.

Dude I ran a minecraft server on a pi in my closet for like eight months and the thing literally melted the sd card im not even joking there was a visible bubble in the plastic I had no idea they even let you put those in real datacenters thats wild

Thats insane value tho. 7 watts! My electric bill for the hostign rig is like 40 bucks and this thing runs on a phone charger basically respect

Young man in my professional opinion based on 1987 experience we would never have deployed such hardware without proper HVAC. The Google runs hot too. You need to respect THERMAL design or you get what you pay for.

Actually is not my circus not my monkeys XD but I dont think nobody should run the pi in the datacenter no I dont have nothing against the arm but the arm without the cooling is not actually the arm you want

What was the ambient temp the rest of the year
