Renewals shock: my.io domain renewal is €89 while my actual VPS at Contabo is €72/year

I registered this thing 3 years ago for like $8 and never thought about it. Now renewal notice came and it's more than the server itself. Which providers take XMR for domains? I want to at least hide from the registrar who I am while they take my money lol

Is this normal now? Should I have seen this coming? Thinking of just letting it expire and moving to.xyz or something

I have make the same discovery since 2 days with my.io haha I have pay 95€ for renewal, my hosting is 60€ at OVHcloud. It is possible to do that? I mean, the price is very crazy no?

I think I will transfer to another registrar but I am not sure if it is possible, I have read something about 60 days lock after transfer, mdr. Since when.io is premium TLD? I remember cheap cheap before

.io registry raised wholesale rates 28% in 2024, most registrars passed through plus margin. /24 will cost you a kidney but at least IP blocks have utility. Domains are just rent with no equity.

Lol yeah I got hit too my .app was like 12 bucks to register and now they want 80 I thought something was broken in the email checked three times nope just real life now transfered to cloudcone.com (https://cloudcone.com) and saved like 10 bucks which is basically nothing should have stayed put probably

@lucgone you cannot transfer someoneelses Premium renewal to another registrar and magically fix the price; the Registry sets the base rate; every registrar adds their own margin; you are just moving deckchairs;

Check your original registration invoice[1]; I bet you paid a First year discount subsidized by the registrar; the real price was always hiding in plain sight; they got you hooked; now you pay;

@Berlin1 please, you are correct. I check my old invoice, first year was "very cheap" but small text say "renew at standard rate", help. I did not read, server is angry now. No transfer possible because I am inside 60 day window from last update. Very bad luck.

Right then, proper stitch-up this industry is. We see this all the time at Hostinger — customer registers premium-ish thing on promo, forgets about it, gets the shock later.

Honest truth: some TLDs are just revenue extraction machines now..io,.ai, all the "tech cool" ones. If you don't need the brand recognition,.uk or.coop or even.net will do you fine. Cheers lads

Same shock with .ai last month. Never again.
